The Double Yoker

October 14, 2026

The other day, I went to make some scambled eggs and had that remarkable experience that doesn’t come that often – the double yoker!! Two glorious yokes coming from within the one shell.

It doesn’t seem that big of a deal, but it gave me a micro-moment of sheer joy! It also made me remember the concept of “glimmers”. Have you heard of them? They are basically the opposite of “triggers” and are those tiny moments of happiness that just appear. However, once one appears and you acknowledge it for what it is, often others follow! They are SO good for us, but do require a bit of work on our part to look for them.

This is because we are so used to being hypervigilant that our brain often looks for the danger or threats in situations rather than the joy! This is known as “negative bias”. Of course, there are times when this is hard to do and there is nothing worse than the eternal optimist when things are tough! Balance is the key.

There is a bit of neuroscience behind them, as once we acknowledge them, they can reframe some of our more negative thoughts and, where triggers can spark feelings of anger or fear (get us into our sympathetic nervous system’s “fight or flight” mode), glimmers offer moments of hope, joy and inner calm. Our actual nervous system is strengthened by them because they send cues of safety to it, (activating our parasympathetic nervous system’s “Rest and digest” mode).

In recent days, some of the heavy showers have brought along with them the most beautiful of rainbows. That’s a glimmer if ever there was one! Other glimmers can be simply walking in nature, listening to birdsong, sharing a smile with a stranger.

Anyway, back to the eggs! This morning (honestly!!) when the eggs were cracked into the frying pan, there was not only one, but two double yokers! I've added photographic evidence!

May your days ahead have a scattering of glimmers.

Keep a lookout for them!
